The Mavericks big wave surfing contest awards $150,000 in prize money. It is one of the most lucrative big-wave contests in the sport. The Mavericks event is held only when swell and waves are ‘big enough’ to test the skills of the world’s best big wave riders. Competitors voted to hold thecontest because forecasts called for record-breaking waves.
The final heat of this year’s contest began in the early afternoon, when the tide was well on it’s way out. As the tide got lower, the waves got harder and harder to surf. Chris Bertish manages to drop into some of the only successful drops and rides of the heat.
The Mavericks Surf Contest is considered one of the most premiere ‘big wave’ contests in the world and attracts a worldwide audience.
