Christopher Lawlor of espn.com on Terrence Jones’ announcement today:
Jones, the versatile 6-foot-9 power forward from Jefferson High in Portland, Ore., will break his silence Friday afternoon (6:30 p.m. ET) when he announces his college choice. The decision is late in the process for the prolific prospect, who played in the Jordan Brand Classic, Nike Hoops Summit and McDonald’s All-American Game — the trinity of senior all-star contests — this spring.
The Lawrence Journal-World will carry the press conference live.
Kentucky Sports Network has re-posted its interview with Terrence Jones from last month.
Percy Allen of the Seattle Times writes on the Jones’ pick:
While prolonging his recruiting with Washington, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, Oregon and Oklahoma, he was able to gain more information about the recruiting process to make an informed decision. The extra time allowed him to make an official visit to Lawrence, Kansas and determine where another standout recruit, C.J. Leslie, was going to college. Leslie decided to play at North Carolina State, which perhaps makes Kentucky’s offer more sweeter to Jones.
Brett Dawson of the C-J reports that John Calipari is considering a JV team:
Might John Calipari revive the junior-varsity basketball concept at Kentucky? According to a series of messages on his Twitter account today, he’s considering it. Calipari has been teasing this week about a suggestion made by Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown. Today, he revealed that Brown suggested adding a JV squad, a longstanding fixture of the North Carolina program.
Gary Parrish of CBS Sports says there is zero chance Bledsoe and Orton return:
Zero (Technically, Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe are “testing the waters,” but nobody expects either to be a Wildcat next season. Both are projected first-round picks. Once they were told that, they were gone. For good.)
Michael Rosenberg of CBS Sports writes on Brandon Knight not signing a letter-of-intent:
Knight gamed the system. The whole point of signing with a school is to enforce a two-way commitment: The school and the prospect swear to love each other, in sickness and in health, in the NCAA tournament and the NIT. Schools can take scholarships away after players spend a year on campus (which I don’t like, but that’s another column). The Letter of Intent ends the recruiting process.
Metz Camfield of the Kentucky Kernel writes that bashing players for following dreams is wrong:
I’ve heard everything from ‘John Calipari might as well be a trainer for the NBA,’ to ‘Why isn’t Calipari making his players stay to earn their degrees?,’ to ‘Everyone going pro is going to be broke in five years anyway.’ I don’t get it. Actually, it genuinely makes me upset.
Eric Lindsey of Cat Scratches has the entire list of early entrants for the NBA draft.
James Pennington of the Kernel writes on the SEC/ESPN deal:
The inherent problem with ESPN promising so much coverage is that it can’t all go on the flagship station or even ESPN2. If an ESPN crew is going to cover a SEC early-season baseball game in the middle of basketball season, how deep into your cable company’s sports package will you have to dig to watch? By the time you get down to watching games live on ESPN Classic, something doesn’t feel right.
Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger on Joker Phillips’ captain’s breakfast:
Joker Phillips certainly feels an obligation to keep the University of Kentucky football program moving forward. However, because he’s a Kentucky native and former UK receiver, he also has a sense of history that he wants to share with his players. That’s why he started the Kentucky Football Captains Breakfast, an event he hopes to make an annual affair on the day of the Blue-White Game that ends spring practice.
Mark Maloney covered Louisville baseball’s win over Kentucky:
After blowing a 6-4 lead by giving up five runs in the top of the ninth, 12th-ranked Louisville came back with four in the bottom of the inning to edge Kentucky 10-9. A regular-season record crowd of 4,039 filled Patterson Stadium, just a few furlongs from Churchill Downs. U of L salvaged a series split, having lost 5-0 at UK 22 days earlier.
Aaron Smith of the Kernel on the UK baseball loss:
It was a game that saw closers from both teams blow leads, a game that saw the bases loaded three separate times in the last two innings, a game that saw two ninth-inning comebacks and a game that drew a Patterson Stadium regular season school-record 4,039 fans.
