New Mexico soccer defender Elizabeth Lambert has been suspended indefinitely from all team practices, competition and conditioning activities after punching Carlee Payne in the back, kicking the ball into the face of another player and violently yanking Kassidy Shumway to the ground by her ponytail.
The incidents in question occurred during a Mountain West women’s semifinal soccer game between Brigham Young and New Mexico on Thursday, November 6. Surprisingly, Lambert remained on the field, receiving a single yellow card from referee Joe Pimentel near the end of the game for tripping a BYU player.
Video of Lambert’s numerous transgressions went viral and perhaps prompted her to say, “I am deeply and wholeheartedly regretful of my actions….I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation…This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player that I am.”
For the record, BYU won 1-0, extending their unbeaten streak to 15 games.
